IAG Boss Takes Two Top Accolades

 

Michael Hawker, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IAG was last night awarded CEO of the Year and Leader of the Year at the 2006 Human Capital Leadership Awards.

Over 250 well respected business people attended the awards ceremony held at the Shangri-La Hotel including The Honourable Tony Abbott.

“I am honoured to receive this recognition for something that I feel so passionate about.  It is especially gratifying and humbling to be selected from such a distinguished group of business people.

“I see these awards as recognition of the strength and capability of the 12,000 people who work at IAG, including my executive team, who have worked so hard to build IAG into the wonderful company it has become,” said Mr Hawker.

“Michael’s two awards were well deserved, he demonstrated exemplary leadership capabilities to the judging panel showing how, under his leadership he added $4 billion to IAG’s bottom line,” said Mr Jon Leighton, judging panel member, Chairman and CEO of JML Australia.

“This year we received hundreds of nominations spread across the nine categories made up of some of Australia’s most talented business leaders.

“The awards have been very well accepted by the business community with this year’s event attracting an even higher calibre of business leaders.”

Innovator of the Year: Professor Ian Fraser AO, Professor in Reproductive Medicine, University of Sydney

Human Resources Leader of the Year: Alec Bashinsky, Human Resources Director, Deloitte

Entrepreneur of the Year: Nic Lyons, CEO, GPT Group

Director of the Year, Jill Weekes, Chief Executive, Starlight Children’s Foundation

Chief Information Officer of the Year: Fiona Balfour, CIO, Telstra

Young Leader of the Year, Michael Malone, Founder, iiNet

Professional Services Leader of the Year: Nicola Wakefield- Evans, Managing Partner, Mallesons

 

“The winners were put through an exhaustive selection process, whereby all nominees were scrutinised as to whether they possessed three key leadership ingredients – credibility, competence and character,” said Mr Leighton.

“All finalists were interviewed and assessed in the areas of demonstrated business results, building organisation capability, building human capital and championing the customer by leading Human Capital consulting organistion CompAssess.”

The judging panel comprised of representatives from the Nominating Council, JML Australia and CompAssess.

Minister for Health, The Honourable Tony Abbott, MP was a guest of honour at the event.  He provided an informative speech on the topic of Australian leadership which was well received by the crowd.
